Beyond the Boundaries of Material and Immaterial

"The essence of art is not found in objects themselves, but in the way they are experienced." – Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Art has always evolved by pushing the boundaries of medium and form. The Arthur & Sébastien Collection 2024 is a space where handcrafted sculptures and algorithm-generated images, layered brushstrokes and code-built structures coexist. This intersection of material and immaterial, tradition and innovation, reflects a contemporary shift in art—one that transcends specific forms and mediums.

While Park Seo-Bo’s repetitive brushstrokes leave a physical trace of meditative thought, Refik Anadol’s data paintings offer a new sensory experience shaped by algorithms. Damien Hirst’s metaphysical inquiries and Beeple’s digital satire demonstrate that physical objects and blockchain-based creations can exist side by side. As CryptoPunks and Xcopy’s pixelated faces deconstruct notions of identity and ownership on the blockchain, Alexander Calder’s mobiles find harmony in movement.

In the past, art existed primarily in physical spaces, later expanding through print and photography. Today, it persists through data, networks, and algorithms. Kevin Abosch once said, “NFTs are not just digital ownership but a tool that redefines how art exists.” In this era, art is no longer bound to materiality—it exists in new dimensions.

Yet, despite these transformations, art remains centered on human perception and experience. Just as Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s aerial photography captures the ecological imprints of our planet, Krista Kim’s digital environments explore spiritual immersion and healing within contemporary sensibilities. This collection challenges how we engage with art, questioning how it manifests—whether in tangible form or as an immaterial presence.

Ultimately, art transcends boundaries and endures.

Material and data, tradition and innovation, handcrafted forms and code-generated spaces—all coexist within the spectrum of contemporary art. Arthur & Sébastien Collection serves as a space for exploration, posing essential questions: How does art exist? How do we experience it? As time progresses, these boundaries will continue to evolve and reshape themselves, expanding the very definition of artistic expression.
