Life Flowing Through the Fog of Death

“Can the dead save the living?” This haunting question by Nobel Prize-winning author Han Kang resonates deeply in the works of ALIENQUEEN. Born in a Thai refugee camp to parents who survived the Cambodian Killing Fields, her life began in the shadow of death. Her story begins in the shadow of unimaginable tragedy—a genocide that claimed a quarter of her homeland’s population and the weight of her family’s survival and the stories of a lost homeland shaped her identity, leaving her to grapple with grief, isolation, and the search for meaning.

As a child, ALIENQUEEN found refuge in her imagination. She envisioned beings beyond humanity—aliens—and found solace in the world of video games, creating her own universe while feeling disconnected from the world around her. It was the outsiders of punk and street culture who embraced her when the rest of the world turned away. In their raw, defiant spirit, she discovered a new sense of freedom. This liberation sparked her creative journey, allowing her to express the deeply buried pain and longing within her through art.

Her works are not just "cool" images—they are confessions etched in color and line, a vivid dialogue between life and death. Drawing from the tragedies of her Cambodian heritage and the resilience of her own survival, ALIENQUEEN’s art reflects on profound questions: What does it mean to live? What does love leave behind? Can beauty exist in the shadow of loss?

This exhibition, Love and Death, is both a meditation on mortality and a celebration of life’s fragile beauty. Through surreal and unsettling visuals, ALIENQUEEN captures the tension between comfort and unease, transforming her experiences into art that seeks solace and connection. Her creations invite us to reflect on the complexities of existence, mourning the past while cherishing the present.

ALIENQUEEN’s journey from a lonely immigrant child to a celebrated global artist is a testament to resilience. Collaborating with brands like Gucci, Snoop Dogg, and Ubisoft, and presenting her work at Sotheby’s, she has redefined the American Dream—turning hardship into purpose and darkness into art. Yet, her focus remains deeply personal, rooted in the stories of love, grief, and identity that shaped her.

This exhibition goes beyond telling her story—it offers a space for us to engage with these questions and see our own lives reflected in her work. Her works remind us of the fragile beauty of existence and the enduring value of love and survival.

And once again, we return to Han Kang’s question:

“Can the dead save the living? Can the past help the present?” Through ALIENQUEEN’s art, perhaps we may find an answer
